A Glimmer of Hope in the Fight Against Extinction: The Story Behind a Heartbreakingly Beautiful Photograph
Imagine a creature so close to vanishing from the Earth that only two females remain. This isn't a dystopian novel, it's the grim reality facing the northern white rhino. But amidst this despair, a photograph captures a flicker of hope: the world's first IVF rhino fetus, a testament to the relentless efforts of scientists battling against time. After 13 attempts, they achieved a viable IVF pregnancy in a southern white rhino. The fetus in Juárez's photograph is the result of this breakthrough. Tragically, the surrogate mother died from a bacterial infection at 70 days, a devastating blow. Yet, this fleeting pregnancy proved the technique's feasibility, a crucial milestone.
